2 Runs on Wilson Creek After Work

Steven "the machine" Hughes left me a message about heading to Wilson Creek this afternoon. I made it after work and caught up with him and RB running shuttle. We got one run in with RB then Steven and I did one more: his 4th, my 2nd. Steven was on fire. I was looking at his back most of the 2nd run. I'm glad we were not in a race because I doubt I would have been able to see him at all after the first or second turn in the creek. The man is a paddling machine!

If this looks like fun thats because it really, really is:

I never looked at the gage but it felt like +2". I hate I missed the exceptional level on Wednesday. Next time...

Friday Afternoon Wilson Creek a little below 0

I made two soulo runs and jogged my shuttle twice. There was a lot of "wildlife" on the creek today but very few boaters. I'm sure some of the groups enjoying the beaches and granite out there were celebrating the end of the school year - I actually got mooned by one of the more vivacious young ladies - crazy times at the creek. The entire time I was paddling or jogging my shuttle, the ony paddlers I saw was one group of Duckies at Razor Back on my first run and Knut and a couple of other guys taking off the creek after I ran shuttle for my second run. The weather and water temperature was great.

I waited for awhile at Triple Drop hoping to get a picture of someone running it but no one came through. It was a good day to just hang out on the rocks, eat a few snacks and chill out.

Big Ride Starting From Upper Creek up Chestnut Mtn to Raidercamp, Upper Harper Creek to North Harper Creek to Yellow Buck to Sinkhole/Goat Trail

Thanks to Johnny Calhoun for bringing the camera and taking some pics. It was a helluva hot day and a big ride. The Morganton weather forecast was high temp of 85 and the "feel like" temp of 95. I don't think it was much cooler than that where we rode. The trail conditions were very good especially considering the amount of rain we have had recently. We chose the trails that drain well. Sinkhole was the most wet out of all the trails we rode and it wasn't too wet except the slippery slope which was treacherous and the normal moist section. The steep down hill was in great shape and totally ride able.

Total time: 6:06 moving time: 4:06 # of stops: 16
Avg speed: 6.4 mph (that avg includes the hike a bike of which there was plenty)
Start/min elevation: 1,259' Max elevation: 2,854' Total elev gain: 7,074'

I met up with Johnny Calhoun, Woody, Chris, and Frank at the Watagua around noon.

Post a great Watagua run and on my drive to Wilson creek, I loaded up on a Cheeseburger from the put in store. The old mgmt called it a Country Boy, now it is just "all the way", still one helluva sandwich:

I didnt get started until about 5:30 but managed to ride up Craig Creek Road to Chestnut Mountain to Raidercamp, and onto Upper Harper Creek and right down to Harper Creek.
